It started with my grandmother.

I knew my grandmother, GiGi, would thrive best in an intimate care environment. Yet we could not locate a place that met our high standards. So I created Olympia Senior Care.

My name is Peter. I am a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, and I have worked with people living with dementia and Alzheimer's since 2008. I have seen memory care from the clinical side for a long time. Looking for a home for my own grandmother was the first time I saw it as a family member, and the two views did not match.

What I wanted for GiGi was not complicated. A real house rather than a wing of a building. Enough caregivers that nobody has to wait. People who would learn who she had been, not just what she now needed. When I could not find it, I decided to build it here in West Olympia.

My vision is to offer a safe, supportive setting where individuals living with dementia and Alzheimer's truly flourish. By embedding Montessori principles into our dementia care, we provide progressive care approaches, stimulating life enrichment, and a cohesive camaraderie that enhances the quality of life for everyone involved.

At Olympia Senior Care our mission is to provide an intimate, dignified haven for seniors navigating dementia. By blending the comfort of a private residential home with specialized Montessori principles, we honor each resident's life history. We focus entirely on what our residents can do, maximizing their independence and joy through tailored daily engagement.

Why Montessori, for dementia

Most people know Montessori as a way of teaching children. The same principles turn out to work remarkably well for memory loss, because both rest on the same idea: give a person a real task they can genuinely succeed at, and give them the cues they need to do it themselves.

In practice that means a resident folding linens rather than being handed a worksheet. Setting a table before a meal she is about to share. A puzzle chosen because it matches something she used to love, at a pace that will not defeat her. Failure-free is the phrase we use. Nothing here is designed so that someone can get it wrong.

How Montessori care works here, day to day

Why this house

Washington limits every adult family home to six residents. That cap is the whole point. It is why a house like this one can feel like a home rather than a facility, and it is why our staffing works out at roughly one caregiver for every three residents.

The house itself is single-story, so there are no stairs to manage. The bathroom has a roll-in tiled shower and grab bars. There is a fenced garden and a large covered deck with raised beds, which residents help plant. There is a piano in the living room, and it gets played.
